The Effort behind being Effortlessnes//Part 1. Hair

I’ve noticed a trend lately, of being effortlessnes.
A casual outfit that still looks put together but in cool, I-have-no-cares way.
Slightly un-done hair, that has that just rolled out of bed look without being too messy.
When I see this look, I am so jealous, wishing I could roll out of bed-throw some clothes on
-call it a day and look that chic.
In reality though, no one can simply roll out of bed and look fabulous
(unless you’re Erin Wasson of course, she can do that).
But sadly not everyone else.
So here are some tips and tricks for looking effortless-
here’s Part 1 in a 3 part series, being how to style your hair to look effortless!
[Par1 2=Makeup + Part 3=Style]

For the hair//

>>Products I like

Whenever I like to make my hair messy-as in beach waves or straight bed-head, I always reach for dry shampoo. There are 2 dry shampoo’s though, the kind that actually makes the oil seem to disappear (this kind is more intense and should be used on hair that is actually dirty, think 3 days after washing it) and then there’s the kind for cleaner hair,
that simply adds a little volume and makes it smell good.
I happen to own both kinds, and have found what seems to me like the best 2.

For dirty hair, I like Batiste. It costs only $8, you can buy it at Walgreens and its fabulous!
(And it comes in colors, which is nice for you dark headed gals)
I like this brand because when you spray it, it comes out white so you know where it’s sprayed on. Wait a minute or rub it around with your fingers and the white goes away!
My tip for this kind of dry shampoo is to spray a bit on your roots, where the oil is, then hold up your hair next to your roots, and spray underneath(like you would a volumizing spray) and rub in again. I also like to flip my head over and rub it in, that seems to help with the messiness!

Image

For clean hair, I love Davines‘ Hair Refresher, and it does exactly what it says-freshens the hair!
I like to apply this the same as Batiste, but with a little more if I think I need it.

For messy hair, beach spray is almost a must. I like to alternate a few out, simply because they all are a little different, yet similar. Keep in mind I do have thin hair, with extensions making it medium thickness, so results may be different on other hair types!

My favorite on the cheap would have to be from Walmart, Not Your Mothers Beach Babe spray-I saw this one actually on The Beauty Department’s Beach Spray For All Hair Types, for Fine Hair(which I have!).
I love this one not only beach it’s cheap, but you can “layer” it by applying some, then some more until you achieve the look you want! You can buy this one here!

Another beach spray I love is also by Davines-it smells SOOO nice and is easy to use, kind of like the NYM, you can add it in layers to achieve what you want! I really recommend this one! (you can get a mini one from birch box
davines_saltspray_exclusive_900x900

Another product that’s similar to beach spray is one of my all time favorite products EVER, by Kusco Murphy Beach Hair, which is a mix between a gel and a hair product that’s similar to beach spray, in a tub.
I’ve found that this product looks best/feels best when I get a little out, about a half dime’s worth and mix it with my hair oil (I posted about it a while back).

Hair tools that I love are a 1 inch curling iron and my wet brush.
I use Hot Tools 1 inch iron, that is a little challenging to use at first-but the results are SOO lovely!!

How to style the hair//

There are 2 ways that I will either do my hair to look effortless-with heat, and without heat!
Obviously without heat is MUCH better for your hair,
but sometimes I like to use heat for a little more oomph!

To create hair without heat, you’ll need to either A) Have a night to create the hair, AKA sleep in a braid or
B) Have curly, wavy hair. For the A option, you’ll follow the directions below,
for B you’ll just follow the directions AFTER the curling(you don’t have to use heat, yay!).

A// Curling the hair

First you’ll need to spray your hair with heat protectant(duh).
Then start curling your hair in small sections if you have finer hair like mine, so that every inch gets curled.
The curling method I like to use is curl about 3/4 of you entire hair shaft, only hold the heat on for a few sec-and then immediately tug downwards on the hair to give it that loose, curled look.

A,B// Curling-without heat braid

For getting beach waves without heat, you’ll need to braid your hair before going to bed-but NOT with wet hair.
This braid is a tad different from a normal braid however.
First of all, if your hair is fine like mine, you’ll make 2 separate braids, one on either side of your head. For thick headed gals, you can make one braid down the back of your head.
To create this braid, make a regular braid-but inverted. Meaning, instead of braiding strand-over-strand, braid strand-under-strand, and try to do this loosely. After your braid is done and secure, hold the bottom where your pony tail is tied and gently pull out each section of your braid so that the strands poke out a bit, this will make your braid become looser and make beach waves overnight.

In the morning after sleeping with braids, or right after curling hair with heat-this is the last step you’ll take!

Last Step//

After either step of making hair curly/wavy, you’ll brush out your hair with a wet brush or a bristled brush.
This will make the hair softer, smoother and more natural looking.
After brushing it out, you’ll apply some dry shampoo at the top of your roots to make your hair fuller.
Rub it in, and flip your upside down to create more volume.
This next step really creates the beach waves!
Mix together the Kusco Murphy and a hair oil of your choice-I like to do this because I find that using the Kusco Murhpy product alone is too much and makes the hair crunchy.
Run this mixture though your hair, and scrunch it in-towards the bottom and the middle of the hair. Don’t brush it out-this will take out the curls!
Next, spray beach spray towards the middle of hair and the ends a bit, scrunch more.
You can add hair spray if you want, but I don’t-simply because the because the beach mixture stays all day!

YOU’RE ALL DONE!!
(woah, take a breather!)

That’s it for Effortless Hair, within the next few days I’ll be doing a, Effortless post about makeup and style.
Until then, here are some lovely examples of Effortless hair.

Tutorial Tuesday//wrapped up

One thing I love about Christmas is the pretty, different ways packages can be wrapped.
This year I used a lot of silver glitter wrapping paper, wrapped with twine and a pine needle filled branch, which was rather messy. I also incorporated washi tape-I wrapped packages in plain paper and simply taped on different designs, making for a cute + unique look.
After you’ve opened everything however, it’s so depressing to throw away all the beautiful paper.
If you’re like me though, you keep it-in hopes that some crafts soon will be there.
I probably should’ve created this post a while ago, since the trash has already gone out-meaning the wrapping paper, but if you’ve still got some left over I’ve got the perfect craft for you.

This Christmas, I received some lovely gifts from my neighbors + dear friends, that was wrapped in the most amazing bicycle print. As soon as I unwrapped it I neatly folded the paper away, already thinking of something I could do with it.
Since the paper was the color of cardboard and the bicycles were printed in black,
I knew gold would surely be a lovely addition.
I’ll be living in an apartment next year, so proper decoration is a must. I know I’ll be using lots of golds and neutrals, but it stinks to have to go out a buy all that-so why not make it!

Wrapping paper>>wall print
_________________

For this craft, you’ll need:
-Printed wrapping paper
-1 or 2 tiny paint brushes
-Glue
-Fine glitter
-Scissors
-A picture frame
-Sharpie/Pen/Marking device

ImageImageImage

>First I took the glass out of the frame + I lay it down on the wrapping paper, making an outline of the rectangle so I could cut the right amount out for the frame.Image

>Next I cut this rectangle out.
Image

>I then picked out 3 bicycles I wanted to paint with the glue and traced their outline//I think 3 is a good number when decorating, or any odd number is.
Image

>after I painted each one, I sprinkled glitter on them so it wouldn’t dry too quickly//I decided to use fine glitter because the bikes were so small
Image

>I shook the glitter around on the paper then dumped it back into the glitter tube to conserve as much as possible

Image

>I repeated this process 2 more times, then voila!
Let the bikes dry for a few minutes, then put in the frame and you’re done!ImageImage

My finished product in my room!
I thought this definitely turned out pretty awesome,
and I’m excited to do it again next year with some fab wrapping paper!

How to get wavy hair WITHOUT heat-I promise!

After trying literally EVERY trick there is to try and get waves without heat(I try to keep my hair extra healthy these days!) I have finally found one that works-I promise!!
I discovered this trick when one of my favorite bloggers, Aimee Song of Song of Style posted about it! So of course, I wanted to share my version! First are the results so that I can PROMISE you that this works!
Image

{What you’ll need}
-Damp hair
-Some sort of hair mousse(I used John Frieda!)
-Lots of bobby pins!

Let’s get started!
1) First things first-start with damp, towel-dried hair! If you just got out of the shower-perfect, just run a towel through your hair. If not, just mist your hair with some water!
Image

2) Run some kind of mousse through your hair-just a light hold one, so it won’t make your hair nasty crunchy!

Image

3.) This is the important step-twist your hair AWAY from your face tightly, all the way down your hair shaft!

Image

4) Take that twisted piece of hair and bobby-pin it to the top of your head! To get it like this literally bring it up on your head, like a crown. Here’s a helpful hint-when placing the bobby pins, make sure that they go a different direction everytime so that they’ll stay while you sleep! And put at LEAST 3 or 4, so they don’t fall out!

Image

5) Do the other side of your hair the exact same!

Image

6) Sleep! (Or walk around the house/do your make-up!) But here’s another helpful tip-since your hair is so tight, it will take  REEEEAALLY long time for your hair to dry, that’s why I suggest sleeping in it, unless you’ve got all day for it to dry!

7) Take your hair down, shake it out and add some Moroccan Oil to the ends! Here’s what mine looked like after:

Image

Image

Image

That’s literally all! I’ve done this several times and each time it’s turned out great! However I’ve noticed with dirty hair, I skip the mousse because my hair holds the curls just fine! You don’t HAVE to use it, it’s just something I like to use!

I hope you enjoyed this easy hair tutorial, I’m sure your hair will turn out fab!
Have a great weekend loves!

Tutorial Tuesday! Smokey Cat Eye

Happy Tuesday everyone!

This tutorial isn’t what I wore to class today (sad face, I know), but it’s what I wore last Saturday night! This look is definitely a night look, unless you’re brave enough to dawn it during the day!  Regardless-these are the things you’ll need.

Yes, I posted a picture of my lighted mirror because it really is SO helpful!

Image

From the left-BareMinerals Flawless definition, Voluminous Lashes, and Buxum Lash. (Black bottles are at Sephora, Gold bottle at Walmart!)

Image

Anastasia eyebrow liners, at Sephora (I used High Arch)Image

Eyebrow filling brush and eyebrow shaping brushImage

From the left-Too Faced eyeshadow primer, Maybelline Eyestudio liner in black, Naked2 palette, and Fresh shimmer palette. Image

I used Half Baked, Bootycall, the purple-looking beige, Pistol, and Blackout.ImageImage

From the left- Jane Iredale makeup primer, Jane Iredale concealer in Z2, Jane Iredale powder foundation, Holiday in Balm beach, Jane Iredale blush, and BareMinerals hydrating setting powder.

Image

I used the top color from the Baked palette.Image

Angled eyelinger brush, thick angled eyeshadow brush, and eyebrow shaper.ImageImage

Concealer brush, foundation brush, bronzer brush, highlighter brush, and setting powder brush. ImageImage

Now that all thats been shared, lets get to the good stuff!

Makeup tip #1-ALWAYS do eye makeup first-if you mess up and spill some powder on your cheek, its easy to just wipe it away or get out the makeup remover without having to worry about taking off your foundation!

So, first things first-put on eyeshadow primer!! This will make your shadow literally stay ALL DAY!

Then, draw on the outline of what you want your cat eye to look like. A good tip is to slightly close your eyes and draw upward until you get to the lid, then draw into the lid. And don’t worry about how terrible this looks right now, TONS of blending will come later!

Image

Image 17

Image 18

Next, start blending the eyeliner into your eyelid like so, using the angled eyeliner brush. Image 20

Then blend in a grey color on top of the black eyeliner which is in your eyelid, this will start to create the smokey look

Image 21

Keep blending until the grey is covering most of your eyelid (but NOT the center of your eyelid!)

The add a silver color to the inside corners of your eye to make your eyes pop, and put a white/silver color on the center part of your lid and also on top of the silver in the corners of your eyes. DONE!Image 22

Now for face makeup! (because I know your all probably scared of looking at my nasty face without it!)

First dap concealer onto blemishes or red spots, and blend by using your fingers and making a downward motion. After the cream concealer is blended, use a concealer brush and pat/blend your foundation on top of the blemish area to keep it concealed.

IMG_4363IMG_4364

Next is foundation! I used Jane Iredal’s pressed powder because I like the light finish it gives my skin. Use a foundation brush and put the foundation ALL over your face, but don’t blend right away.

As soon as you think theres powder covering your whole face, blend in a downward motion. I keep saying to blend downward because there’s tiny hairs all over your face that grow downward, and if you blend them down-they stay down and aren’t noticable. If you blend them upwards and all around, they become noticeable and your face might look uneven.IMG_4365

Next comes conturing! This part can get kind of tricky, so I included an extra photo for help if my directions aren’t clear.

For conturing, I use my bronzer brush and my bronzer (without a lot of sparkle thought-try to find a matte bronzer). Apply your bronzer first in the hallows of your cheekbones, then right about the outer part of your eyebrows, then right on your jaw line. Conturing is a HUGE step a lot of people miss, but it really does make the biggest difference in looking good-and looking freakin fantastic! Think about it-foundation creates a solid blank canvas on your face, with the same color all over. Conturing adds the color back to your face and it defines cheekbones (making us look skinnier-PLUS!) SO DONT skip this!IMG_4366IMG_4367 IMG_4368106467978660760120_FIF5mpey_c

After conturing, I usually add some color and definition to my eyebrows(They’re naturally super light without a specific shape!) For this, I trace my brows with Anastasia’s brow kit. This makes it super easy to find the right shape for you without looking clown-scary. If you don’t have a brow shaping kit-here’s some easy tips for filling in brows and making them have fuller shape.

Use an angled brow brush with an eyeshadow color slightly lighter than your eyebrows. But first things first!-DO NOT FORGET EYESHADOW PRIMER!! What’s more awkward than thinking your makeup looks so fab than to find out one of your eyebrows has been wiped away?? Well ladies, I don’t think anything IS more awkward! So just use the same primer that you used for your eye-makeup.

So to fill in the brows-scrunch your face to make a “mad face”. this will make your brows into a straight line on top. Trace this line and fill in on the way. Then do the bottom part of the brows the same way. Bascially follow your natural brow shape with a little definition, because if you make your brows TOO defined they won’t look real!

Lastly, if you find your brows are too harsh, simply use one of your fingers to blend the edges, wah-lah!

IMG_4371 IMG_4372 IMG_4373

Next comes eyeshadow! I use 3 mascaras that are listed at the top, but basically you need a thickening and lengthening mascara. (TIP-do one eye at a time so the mascara doesn’t have time to dry in between different coats!)

I actually don’t curl my lashes because they’re naturally curly-but I definitely recommend doing so! First, use the thickening mascara on the bas of your lashes. This crates volume. Do about 3 coats of this, then move on to the lengthening. Focus the lengthening mascara on the tips, and do about 2 coats of this. Then blend the 2 mascaras by using the lengthening mascara to go from bottom to top. Just a friendly tip-NEVER curl your eyelashes when there is mascara on them. This leads to serious breakage which you most definitely DO NOT want if your lashes are already on the sort side.

IMG_4374 IMG_4376

That’s all for the smokey cat eye look! I hope you found this helpful!! If you have any questions or comments feel free to comment or email me!

Here’s the finished look!

Tutorial Tuesday! Leather Nails-is this real life???

Goodevening ladies!

As we all know, leather is HUGE in fashion right now and so is embellishment! Well, the latest nail trend combines the two!!!! WAHHHHH LEATHER NAILS!!!!! I’m literally SO excited about this, I’ll be ordering mine probably…right after I post this!!

Alexa Chung wore this nail trend at the British Fashion Awards earlier this month, and as soon as she did-it sold out!! Nails Inc. London (one of my FAV nail polish brands-they have the COOLEST 3-d effect nail polish!) makes the stuff and it’s sold at Sephora in a kit-the leather nail polish is included and so are 4 swavorski crystal skulls. The kit is $25, and while I’m not super crazy about the skulls, I KNOW I’m super crazy about the leather nail polish! Seriously, so cool.

Click the picture with Alexa Chung to watch a quick video about it! SO IN LOVE!!!ImageImage

Enjoy!! When I get my nail polish in I’ll be sure to post pics! Ta-ta for now lovelies!!

Tutorial Tuesday. Gris et noi.

Grey & Black.

Goodmorning pretties! Last night at an ungodly hour, I decided to paint my little nails! I debated on doing the typical french mani, the black tip, or ombre nails, but I wanted to do something I’d never done-which would be grey nails with black tips!! Well, actually I don’t have a grey at my house (it’s in my dorm room! oops…) so I used a really dark purple by Essie.

For this look, I put 3 coats of Essie’s Smokin’ Hot color on (I always use 3 coats of Essie because all the colors seem to be a little translucent, but they always dry fast), and painted on lines at the tips with Sally Hensen Diamond Strength-Black Diamonds 480. It was so easy!! Oh, and then I put on a topcoat of course, but that was it! No fancy techniques here. Check out the results and try it for yourself!! Seriously so easy. And so on trend!!
