room with a view 1/2

Finally all settled in, I’m sharing my new small space. Located in East Village, my roommate and I are loving our neighborhood – we’re a few blocks down from PDT, Yoga To the People, and Ave A’s thriving restaurant scene. Coming later to Flancake.co will be a guide to my favorite things to do in East Village, but for now it’s all about the new digs. This is the first of two postings, so stay with me.

East Village is one of the most eclectic scenes in Manhattan, and when decorating I kept that in mind. The entire time, ‘Urban Outfitters becomes an adult’ was the theme, and I think I nailed it. What I love most about decorating is incorporating small trinkets or items you treasure into your space. I’ve collected many small [some strange] things over the years. My most treasured items are things I’ve been given, and also happened across.

Top left, my statement bracelets are displayed on an old piece. I love displaying books I’ve read, since most of the time their covers are beautiful [sorry I judge my books by their cover]. Bottom left is another shelf from my book shelf/ladder from The Container Store. I also love showing my jewelry, so I used another old display piece, paired with glass lightbulbs from Hobby Lobby. I then added a personal touch with memories from Governors Ball last year, encased in a frame from Urban Outfitters. I’m all about good scents, so on a run to Trader Joe’s I grabbed some eucalyptus and hung it to dry [I also hung a bit in my shower, so when it gets steamy it smells fresh].

Nook

My trusty record player had to make the voyage up with me, although getting all of my records here was a trip [note–they are uber heavy and I recommend putting your back into it]. Another item from Urban Outfitters, this record player has lasted me for years now.

When I got to the city, I knew I had to get some plants to fill up my space so I went down the street and picked up some cacti, succulents, and this amazing hanging plant. It’s been fun to watch them grow as I’ve been in the city for two months now, and also watch one of them die [oops! there weren’t any care instructions…].

Funny thing about most New York apartments, most rooms don’t have overhead lighting. Getting a little creative, I strung up some bulb lights around my window and got a sconce for next to my bed–because my room is all white, the light bounces off quite nicely.

Hats are an obsession of mine, however it’s always been hard thinking of a way to display them. At my last apartment, the idea to hang them with command hooks came to me–you can’t see the tacky hooks, so the hats float perfectly. If you use heavy duty hooks, you can even hang your scarfs and bags on them as well.

As mentioned above, there’s something thrilling about finding unique, even strange treasures. While walking around East Village, Obscura Antiques & Oddities came across my path, the most interesting yet equally freaky place–the perfect spot in my eyes. The place is stocked with old medical supplies, animal heads [even a stuffed snake with two heads], history books from the 1800’s, clowns, miniature hands, everything. My favorite find was a constellation torn out of a 1950’s educational book. It’s beautiful, no pictures can ever do it justice. In my room it’s paired next to another great find, from 410 Vintage Market in Fayetteville, AR. This lullaby was kept in it’s original frame, with it’s original glass too. Above all these, from Target is a super cool [also super cheap] tapestry found a while back.

Part two will be coming shortly! Stay tuned.

>>Navajo<<

Recently, I’ve been so intrigued by the Navajo culture and especially prints and patterns.
I’ve always wanted a Navajo blanket but I thought, perhaps, a jacket could suffice.

I always see jackets such as these for sale, advertised as hand painted-but at price points way beyond my reach.
Yes, these jackets probably shouldn’t be any cheaper, since someone took their precious time hand painting them,
but I guess I just wanted to paint my own for justification.

I ventured into my local thrift once again (for about the hundredth time this break) and found the perfect denim shirt/jacket,
and started painting as soon as I was home.
This is what I came up with!

ImageImage

Yes, my pattern is a bit uneven, but that’s what makes it unique!
I free handed this pattern, so I wouldn’t expect it to be pitch-perfect.
To make this, I used simple acrylic paint and puffy paint for the yellow outline.
I have yet to wash my jacket/shirt, but I doubt I will since I’m afraid the paint may come off!

Magic Monday

It’s a marvelous Monday indeed, I hope you feel the same!

Because my last post was so incredibly long, I thought I would give my readers a break from the brain and focus on the eyes. I really wanted to share with you all some photos that really inspire me with outfits, makeup, crafts-everything. I feel like all these images capture some kind of happy and mystical spirit, since they are all similar in fact.
Enjoy!

As you can tell, I’ve got a thing for older pictures. Something about the time back then is just SO magical and inspiring, I can’t get enough of it! If you really want to continue looking for inspiration, watch the movie Hugo-preferably towards the end where old film is watched and how they used to make it is revealed, which is oh so interesting. You’ll be in for a treat, I promise.
That’s it for tonight sleepyheads.

Obsessions: The not-so-sweat pant

Wait a minute-who is this and what have they done with Flancake? Sweat pants?? I mean really???
Ok ok, it actually is me. I know right, who would’ve thought in a trillion years that I would EVER be talking about this as a trend, definitely not an obsession of mine!! But it’s true-I’ve fallen for the not-so-sweat pant, as I like to call it!

So before I explain what makes this so great, first let me clear up a few things. I honestly believe that this trend only looks good dressed up-as in, with heels, strappy sandals, or super bling-with a mix of sporty fun. Now, the not-so-sweat pant, contrary to belief, isn’t actually even a sweat pant. Nope-don’t go running to Nike to get these-it’s basically a super tailored pant with an elastic waist(I must say, elastic waist’s are a favorite of mine!).
I think the reason I love this trend oh-so-much is because I LOVE mixing dressed up and dressed down looks-there’s just something so chic about it, so cool. These pants are no doubt the perfect way to give off a chic, cool vibe.
So as I said, I think this trend looks best paired with heels and jewels-to dress it up! BUT-if you must wear tennis shoes with it(which I probably will be for class!) then wear extra pretty jewels-they balance out the sporty-ness! For colors, I think that neutrals are the best choice for this trend. Because they are a pretty new trend, they might be around for a while(maybe a few seasons), but I honestly don’t think they’re here to stay, so don’t go crazy with prints. Plus-neautrals are so easy to wear!
With all that said-let’s see how these fab pants can be styled, where to buy them, and my take on the not-so-sweat pant!

So first lets talk leather-ohemgee, SO fab!! I mean really, leather not-so-sweat pants, what could possibly be better??? I think that this combo works so well because leather is such a staple and such a statement, that the pants just WERK. (notice the strappy shoes in both pictures and how they dress them up even more!)

ImageImageImage

Image

No really, how cool are these not-so-sweat pants with side stripes? Not only are vertical stripes so flattering(they mike you look super tall!) they add a pop of super cute color! I also love how both gals are wearing pointed heels-they really pull the outfits together and also dress up the pants even more.

 ImageImage

Now, for those who just cant resist the classic cotton not-so-sweat pant, these are for you! I love how all of these outfits are wearing easy to wear pants, but they all look so pulled together! Even though the first outfit is with sneaks, the glittery shirt adds a major dress-it-up factor. I love the sweater in the J.Crew Fall 2013 lookbook, how it adds an extra bit of coziness, but the heels still keep the pants dressed. The last outfit is just SO chic-I love the vest paired with the pants, and how her shirt hits right at the waist line-so flattering. Just overall great outfit!

ImageImageImage

Now, this is how I styled my 2 pair’s of not-so-sweat pants!

First things first-ignore the fact that I have no makeup on(I just started accutane-WOO, so I’m trying to limit makeup, you can follow my progress Tumblr at http://accutaneflancake.tumblr.com if you’d like!) And also don’t mind the water droplet on my pants-oops!

For this first outfit, I paired my not-so-sweats with a lace tee to dress them up. Even though they are silk, they still look to me like sweat pants. I paired my low sandals with snakeskin straps because I love how lace and snakeskin look together-it’s almost like the mimic each other in such a fabulous way!!

For this outfit, I chose something a little more casual-I threw my hair up and put a tee on! I kept some wedges on though to keep things dressy, I wore my fancy vintage necklace from my grandma’s closet and I tucked in the front of my shirt-something I basically always do.

Back to school we go!

It’s Monday ya’ll!
For some strange reason I have definitely thought it was thursday all day, not even kidding. Ok, anyways….

This morning I spent about 5million hours redoing the Cross-eyed Cricket’s windows!
As we all know, or probably don’t want to even think about, school is right around the corner! For the August windows, I wanted them to reflect this!
For the windows, I used many different items to reflect a school setting-

Toys, rulers, children’s drawings, lots of pencils, erasers, and of course lots of vintage toys!! (and a really cool old school desk!)

As you can tell from the pictures, these windows are very colorful!
To add some spunk to them, I added some mini plastic toys (dinosaurs, butterflies, bugs) and spray painted them gold and silver! I saw this on an interior decorator’s blog, and I just thought it was too cool! To me, it gives these silly toys an adult feel. In the old desk, I put a really neat shelf thing and filled it with small details like clowns, an apple, legos, books and pencils in mason jars! In the other window, I borrowed a really neat shelf with the letter’s A B C D on them, in bright colors! I added a few globes with class ribbons to add a feel of a classroom, and I added a few wagons with books in them!

Ok, I’ll stop going on about how cool they are. I promise that if you go see them for yourself, you might love them as much as I do! Also, in person-you can see the littler details!!
Enjoy!

That’s all for today! Be sure and go check out my windows at The Cross-Eyed Cricket!

The Big Surprise!

It’s Tuesday ya’ll!!!

So, as promised…I’m revealing the big surprise that I mentioned a few posts back!
Starting tomorrow, Wednesday(in case you didn’t know!) my grandmother’s shop, Crosseyed Cricket will be carrying my refurbished distressed furniture and home goods! I’ve painted and distressed every piece by hand, and it’s taken a LOT of hours-every piece is different! I LOVE the color’s I’ve used so far, they really will make a room pop!
I wanted to put my things in my grandmother’s store because A) They really can add so much color to one room! And B) All of my items, besides the bigger furniture, make the perfect gifts!! There are a TON of different colored chalkboard frames to choose from, so take your pic! Also, all of my things are VERY reasonably priced! None of the smaller items are over $40 and the furniture won’t be over $100 (of course unless it’s a very refurbished, very old piece that took a long time to finish!)

I wanted to show you some pictures of what I’m talking about because I think you’ll love it! I know I do!
First of all though, here are the Fourth of July windows that I did!
I wanted to give off a feel of flags flying in the wind, so I decided to hang them for a cool effect! I also wanted to incorporate some of the things I had made with the things that are already in the store. I made sure to have one red, white, and blue bigger object in both windows, but keeping them somewhat different. I also used small antique cannons that were laying around the store to really give off the July 4th vibe-enjoy!

ImageImage

This turquoise piece is SO gorgeous, so sorry for the terrible picture quality-but it really is so pretty in person! This end table is also ONLY $60!! SUCH a steal! It’s a little hard to see, but the little distressed green vase is also available-so cute! Come see them tomorrow in the store
from 10:30-5!

Image

Here are some other options available-a turquoise bamboo mirror that hangs on a wall diagonally, a really cool yellow mirror with sconce that hangs, a small turquoise candle holder, and really awesome orange leaf sconces (perfect for fall)!Image

Here is a yellow distressed chalk frame with really awesome blue water color shining through the distress, and a really cute turquoise candle holder that can double as a ring holder!

Image

Sorry these are upside down, but these turquoise antique sconces are SO adorable!! I wish I could put them in my room but I’m repainting it soon…turquoise haha oops!

Image

Here’s a great mint distressed with yellow underneath magazine holder! SO cute!Image

Here’s another candle holder that you can use to display jewelry on and an adorable smaller chalk board frame that is hangable!

Image

And another larger chalkboard frame! This orange one is SO cute-and it hangs too!

Image

Another mint large chalkboard frame-this would make the perfect gift!Image

Here’s a FAB green broke tray that would look perfect on a coffee table! Image

This is probably my favorite turquoise chalkboard frame, it’s HUGE-it will be going outside the store for now! But it won’t be there for long!

Image

Sorry for another terrible quality, but these green sconces are SO cute!Image

Last but not least here is a perfect gift item-a small square chalkboard frame-that’s only $8!Image

There are a few things in the windows that are of course for sale and a TON more things coming to the store soon that I’m working on right now!
There wil be a few more furniture pieces coming, and a lot more smaller gift items!
And in case you were curious, I also can do custom work-for frames, furniture, just whatever!! (mail boxes I think would look SO cute distressed!)

___________

Well that’s my surprise lovely ladies! I hope your as excited as I am about this new adventure!
Don’t worry though-I’m still making shorts, I’m working on July 4th ones right now!
Come in tomorrow through Saturday to check out the new things-I bet you’ll love them!

Until next time loves!
Have a great night!

(Oh and wish my mom a happy birthday! She’s 29 😉

My newest adventure!

Happy Saturday all!

I’ve ventured into new territoy-which is making cut-off jean shorts!
I decided to make them for a few different reasons-1) Theyre SO easy! 2) I didn’t really like the way other people/places make theirs 3) I wanted to make them for other people too!

I was SO inspired by these shorts that Rosie Huntington-Whitley wore to Coachella in 2012, and I just HAD to have them, well make my own version that is! Here’s her version

Image

(and some other pics of them!)

ImageImage

And my version!

Image

I was literally SO proud and excited about these!! Not only are they so cute, but they fit perfectly! They’re SO comfy-I made them out of some old interesting (maybe maternity?) jeans from a local thrift store!

Here are some of my other shorts that I’ve made!

ImageImage

My pricing is going to be:
$30 for shorts with fabric/heavy embellishment
$25 for shorts with lots of holes/distressing
$20 for shorts with just a few holes

I’m going to do a tutorial soon on how to make these really easy shorts!
(But it’s all about the jean-fit I promise!)
I just wanted to share about how cute they are!!!
If you want to order some(In the picture with the 4 shorts-the Top and Bottom shorts on the right are sold!) (I can ship anywhere in the US) just comment below! Or I can do custom orders, email me at flwilson@uark.edu with the subject line “Shorts”

I hope you like them (I’M OBSESSED!)

Also, here is another one of my creations!

These will soon be sold at Crosseyed Cricket! (Email me for info about these if you’d like some with subject line “Earrings”)

That’s all for today!
Have a great Sunday!!

Old is new again.

It’s hump day everyone-this is definitely something to be excited about!
For me, I’m looking at today and thinking how I can re-wear my old clothes, but still in a fashionable way! And of course I want to share this with you readers, too!

As I was cleaning out my closet a few weeks ago, I came across a few articles of clothing that I loved, but wasn’t sure how to wear them at the moment, but I still decided to keep them. Two of those were this blue skirt from Franchesca’s-circa 2010 and this cream pleated skirt from
Forever 2-circa 2010. Throughout the different outfits, you’ll see some of the same accessories and clothes paired with the skirts, because I’m showing you how to really wear your closet, something i’m trying to work on!Image

(Ignore my nasty big toe^)

Image

Since I’m going to be showing you how to wear these old skirts new again, I figured it’d be best to make a casual outfit, a dressed up outfit, and a work outfit. Enjoy!

Blue Skirt: Casual #1
Why it works-first of all, tying a shirt up always makes things a lot more casual rather than tucking it in, and it’s always a fun touch. The polka dots go with the blue stripe because they’re both a shade of blue, and the grey Superga’s are the gray that the dot’s are, so they match. I added a fun pop of color for the necklace just to give the outfit some sparkle, because we all know I love some sparkle.

Blue Skirt: Casual #2
Why it works-this outfit is for the girls who want to be in a rodeo, or just pretend that they’re western. Either way works. This whole outfit works first of all because of the denim vest, it ties everything together. While most people won’t associate lace with western wear, this can definitely make the cut. Also, wearing the lace not tucked-in and letting it show adds a feminine touch to the outfit. The fringe necklace makes everything a little cowboy-up too, and the boots of course are a must.

Outfit details: Lace Shirt{Urban Outfitters} Vest{American Eagle} Fringe Necklace{?} Vintage Crystal Necklace {Chaincrochet} Boots{Frye}

Image

Image

Image

Blue Skirt: Dressed up
Why it works-this dressy outfit works on so many levels because of the color scheme. I don’t care who you are, blue and cream/beige looks good on EVERY skin tone! It really is SO flattering! The cut of this shirt-which is kind of boxy and cropped is perfect with this skirt because it means you can make the skirt high waisted, which is so chic. The gold jewelry complements the shoes and the purse too without overpowering them.
Outfit details: Shirt{LF California} Necklace{Vintage} Purse{Vintage} Shoes{Sam Edelman}

ImageImage

Image

Image

Blue Skirt: For Work
Why it works-First of all, closed toe shoes for a work environment are a must. Unless you work in some kind of trendy retail or some place that you don’t have a desk, ALWAYS wear closed-toe shoes, it’s only appropriate. Also, a blazer isn’t always a must but if you’re going to wear sleeveless, like this shirt-you definitely have to. This blazer is a linen grayish-greenish boyfriend fit, making it super comfortable. And the sleeves are quarter length making it perfect for summer. You’re probably wondering about the peplum shirt underneath though, I’ll explain. This works because it’s a loose fit peplum, not tight like the popular ones right now. The fabric(a silk-like material) is also good under linen because it isn’t over powering. Adding the crystal collar necklace makes this outfit pretty too.
Outfit details: Blazer{BarII} Shirt{H&M} Necklace{Francesca’s} Shoes{Dillard’s}

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now for the cream skirt! (I will most likely be wearing this a LOT lately!)

Cream Skirt: Casual
Why it works-this fun outfit works because not only is it flirty and fun, but the top’s cream goes perfectly with the skirt! As the first outfit was tied up, this one is too to make it more fun! I added the cream necklace with gold on it underneath the collar to match the gold on the shoes-so perfect!
Outfit details: Shirt{My boyfriend got it for me!} Necklace{Forever21} Shoes{same as before}

Image

Image

Cream Skirt: Dressed up
Why it works-now you might be thinking ummm, are those sneakers with a so called “dressy” outfit? And the answer is yes! I added these instead of heels because the top is SO dressy, it might be overkill. But of course heels are always acceptable for dressing up! This top works absolutely perfect with this skirt because of the length and cut-the length of this top is a tad longer than normal, so when not tucked in it hits the skirt right above the part where the skirt flares out a bit, making it a perfect combo. The cut is a tulip cut, meaning it’s like 2 half moons on each side, so it works great.
Outfit details: Top{J.Crew} Shoes{same as above}

Image

Image

Cream Skirt: Work
Why it works-this cream on cream ensemble works because it makes the blazer and the jewelry the centerpieces of the outfit. I paired the same cream top from the dressy blue skirt outfit with this skirt because they’re similar in color, making for a perfect combo, and this purse because it has colors that are in the jewelry as well.
Outfit details: Blazer, Shirt, Necklaces and Shoes{all used previously} Purse{Anthropologie}

________________________________________

You might have noticed that I didn’t include any links to buy these clothes, I did this for a reason! First of all, all of these clothes are at least a year old so they probably aren’t for purchase anymore. Secondly though, the bigger reason-is because I want you to use your clothes! These outfits weren’t put together to be exactly copied, but to serve as inspiration! Gather some pieces in your closet that are similar, and get creative with your own outfits!

That’s all for today ladies, I hope you gathered some inspiration with my skirt outfits! I’ll probably do a post similar to this next week, but with a dress!
Until next time!
